Water-Smart Agriculture Across the Middle East

October 6, 2025

Water scarcity threatens food production in arid Middle Eastern nations like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Water-smart agriculture techniques—drip irrigation, hydroponics, and treated wastewater reuse—are critical for sustainability.

Israel pioneered drip irrigation systems now used across the region. The UAE invests in vertical farms growing leafy greens with 95% less water than traditional methods. Saudi Arabia’s wheat self-sufficiency drive combines groundwater monitoring with satellite-based irrigation scheduling.

Policy reforms supporting water pricing, desalination-powered agriculture, and public-private research partnerships are accelerating adoption. Long-term resilience requires integrating renewable energy into desalination plants and scaling climate-resilient crop varieties.
