Disease Surveillance with AI in Africa

October 6, 2025

Africa’s healthcare systems face recurring threats from infectious diseases like Ebola, malaria, and COVID-19. AI-powered surveillance tools now analyze hospital reports, mobility data, and climate variables to predict outbreaks before they spiral.

Nigeria’s use of AI models for Lassa fever detection and Uganda’s pilot drone delivery for medical supplies illustrate early successes. The Africa CDC collaborates with universities to integrate AI into cross-border disease surveillance networks.

Challenges include fragmented health data, limited diagnostic infrastructure, and funding gaps. Partnerships with WHO, private AI labs, and telecom firms are helping expand data coverage and early warning capabilities across the continent.
