How 5G NTNs Are Redrawing Africa’s Digital Map

October 6, 2025

Satellite-based 5G, known as non-terrestrial networks (NTN), is being piloted across Africa to close persistent digital gaps. Telecom firms and space-tech providers are deploying hybrid systems that combine terrestrial networks with low-earth orbit satellites, especially for rural schools, clinics, and SMEs.

Countries like Ghana and Kenya are early adopters, testing NTN connectivity for e-learning and telemedicine. The model could leapfrog fiber rollout in remote regions, enabling IoT applications in agriculture and logistics. While spectrum regulation and affordability remain challenges, NTN could redefine Africa’s digital economy by bringing millions online faster than ever.
