Egypt’s Desert Farming Projects Show Promise

October 29, 2025

Egypt’s push to convert desert land into cultivable fields has yielded its first measurable successes, according to government reports released on Oct. 28. Using drip irrigation, desalinated water, and solar-powered pumps, the pilot projects are growing vegetables and cereals sustainably.

The projects form part of Cairo’s long-term plan to ensure food resilience and reduce dependence on imported staples.

Agricultural experts view Egypt’s model as a potential case study for water-stressed nations in the Middle East and Africa.
