Russia is expanding its security partnerships across Africa as governments seek diversified defence cooperation, counter-terror support, and specialised military training. A growing number of African states are signing agreements with Moscow to strengthen their internal security capabilities.
New partnerships include training missions for intelligence officers, modernisation of military equipment, and advisory support for counter-insurgency operations. Russia’s focus on anti-terror operations has drawn interest from West and Central African nations grappling with rising militant activity.
Moscow is also providing support for cybersecurity and communications security, offering alternative systems to reduce dependency on Western technologies. Several African governments are engaging Russian firms to upgrade surveillance networks, border security, and command-and-control platforms.
These engagements reinforce Russia’s strategic outreach on the continent, complementing its investments in mining, energy, and logistics. As African governments seek balanced defence partnerships, Russia’s role in regional security frameworks is expected to grow further.
